St John’s Academy recognises that maths is both a key skill within school, and a life skill to be utilised through everyday experiences. A high-quality maths education provides a firm foundation for understanding how maths is used in everyday life and activities, developing pupils’ ability to reason mathematically.
At St Johns Church of England Academy we follow ‘CanDoMaths’ following the belief that everyone can enjoy and achieve in mathematics.
By teaching mathematics we aim to enable all pupils:
- to have a positive attitude towards maths and an awareness of the relevance of maths in the real world.
- to provide a process of enquiry and experiment.
- to develop an ability to solve problems and think logically in order to work systematically and accurately.
- to develop an ability to work both independently and in cooperation with others.
- to have competence and confidence in their maths knowledge, concepts and skills.
- to have an appreciation of the creative aspects of maths and an awareness of its aesthetic appeal.
A maths mastery approach is taken to the curriculum, in which fluency comes from deep knowledge and practice. This means that structured questioning is used to ensure that pupils develop fluent technical proficiency and think deeply about the underpinning mathematical concepts.
Focus is put on the development of deep structural knowledge and the ability to make connections, with the aim of ensuring that what is learnt is sustained over time.

Five Essentials for a CanDoMaths Classroom:
Convince – Convincing, justifying and explaining to others. The answer is only the beginning.
Apply – Applying to different contexts, solving problems and making connections.
No – Understanding what it’s ‘not’ as well as what it is.
Draw – Drawing the concept to ‘see’ structures and relationships.
Ok – It’s ok not to be able to do it…yet. It’s ok to make mistakes.

The impact and measure of our mathematics curriculum is to ensure that children at St John’s Church of England Academy are equipped with the mathematical skills and knowledge that will enable them to be ready for the curriculum at Key Stage 3 and for life as an adult in the wider world.
